D-backs negotiating with Cabrera

The D-backs are in discussions with right-hander Daniel Cabrera about a contract, but as of Sunday afternoon no agreement had been reached.

Arizona officials declined to comment on situation.

D-backs scouts saw Cabrera throw in the Dominican Republic on Saturday.

My sense is that they are looking for him to add pitching depth to the organization. Cabrera was designated for assignment by the Nationals on May 27 after going 0-5 with a 5.85 ERA in nine games (eight starts).

The D-backs have been using Yusmeiro Petit as their fifth starter of late and due to struggles by some of the pitching prospects as well as some dead arm periods, the club has not had many other options.

Whether Cabrera would be used as a starter or reliever should the D-backs wind up signing him is not known.

I can’t stand it! Another pickup of a designated for assignment player. Maybe Josh can see who he can get out of the Old Pitchers Home.

Given the way this season has gone, signing Daniel Cabrera would actually be a smart move as long as we don’t overpay. He’s always been a guy with the physical talent to be a top starter but he didn’t put it all together in Baltimore or Washington. He’s young enough that maybe the third time is the charm.

What makes Josh Byrnes think he will do any better in this organization than he did in Washington and Baltimore. If Leo Mazzone could not fix him while Cabrera was in Baltimore, how is Mel Stottlemyre Jr going to do anything whenever he can’t even fix his own bullpen.

I’d like to know what Byrnes’ plans are for Billy Buckner. They trade for him, he makes the roster out of Spring Training and they use him in middle relief, then send him down, then bring him up. He has some quality starts and has 1 rough outing and they send him down again. He’s pitching great at Reno and they’re taliking about signing Cabrera. Why don’t you effectively develop the talent you already have???
